Initially I intended this song to be on our first album, fitting in lyrically with the eventual theme of ''Attack of the Grey Lantern'', an idea I had been mulling around for years to write a collection of songs about shady small town characters I had met growing up in North Wales. Another song similar in style to Flourella was Moronica, a song we recorded in our first ever batch of recordings. Listening back to them now I can hardly believe I wrote songs with such bizarre lyrics.

Release Announcement

Lquote.png Over the past few months I've been working with Parlophone on pulling

together the loose ends since the split of the band. What we have decided is that Mansun's fourth album sessions will be released later this year. These recordings will appear in a three CD package, entitled 'Kleptomania'. CD1 will be the fourth album sessions, CD2 will have the best stuff from the EPs (the tracks that weren't ever available on the albums), and CD3 will be rare and unreleased material that we have dug up from the vaults at Abbey Road. I will also be writing detailed sleeve notes for the release which should be out in the autumn of this year.

Lquote.png 'When Parlophone first approached me to put out tracks from the aborted fourth Mansun album I had a listen through a big pile of tapes and rough CDs that I had walked away from, with no idea of what type of record I was writing. I felt really terrible about the demise of the band and had no judgement on the quality of what the band had recorded so far for the fourth album. To say it was difficult to record is an understatement. Different versions, alternative choruses, different versions, guide vocals, bum notes, you name it. Tracks you'll hear are unfinished songs, and I had always intended to add another 2 or 3 songs to the album. In hindsight I think the music I wrote is good enough for people to look past all this and hear the songs, the words and melodies. I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to what is essentially a work-in-progress. We initially considered calling the album Mansun, but towards the end of the sessions Kleptomania was intended to be the title. So it has now become the title of this record.

This CD is for all the fans who stuck with the band through thick and thin and to the people who petitioned for these songs to be released. We'll never be able to repay you for the enthusiasm for our music, for the euphoria of the good times and the support through the bad. Thank you for coming to the gigs and festivals, for writing the fanzines, fansites and letters, for buying the records but most of all for allowing this music to see the light of day.'

1. Getting Your Way

'This was always going to be the opening song on the album. The last version of this song had a completely new chorus but was not complete enough to release. This is an earlier version that sounds close to the version we played on our last tour.'

'This was recorded at Jacob's studio in Surrey. This is an early version of the song before new guitars were added, but the only mix we have available in a listenable form.'

3. Keep Telling Myself

'I woke up on September 11 2001 to see the second plane going into the World Trade Centre. I wrote this song that day, it was the first song I had written in a very long time. I remember vividly writing it but it wasn't an enjoyable experience, I just needed to do it. This is a fully finished song that Mike Hunter mixed with me in my home studio.'

4. Harris

'I wrote this song about how people are blinded by nationalism. Harris refers to Bomber Harris. Chad and I recorded the vocals and guitar live at Rockfield Studios and later overdubbed the backing vocals and bass.'

5. Love Remains

'We listened through my home demo version before recording, then just played the track a few times and this is how it sounded. It was done in Jane Seymour's ballroom at St. Catherine's Court, where we did most of the recording for these 4th album sessions.'

6. Cry 2 My Face

'This was the last song recorded for the album. It was never finished and this rough version is the only copy that exists.'

'This was the first song recorded for the album. We rehearsed it at a rented farmhouse in Surrey then recorded it live at RAK Studios in London. It's a song about running away from technology and progress. But listening back it sounds like me running away from the band.'

8. Home

'About being involved in a destructive relationship and having the strength to get out of it. Only a guide vocal exists on this track, other than that the backing track is complete.'

'I was trying to get a hybrid of an electronic and rock track as the arrangement for this song. I wanted to cut up the bass guitar on the verse so it was like a big beat record going into a powerful bridge. I wrote this when I was disillusioned with living in the city and wanted to get away from it all. The lyrics are pretty self explanatory.'

11. Good Intentions Heal The Soul

'I always has a problem with writing direct lyrics, I wrapped things up in gobbledegook so as to not expose myself too much. This song puts that right. This was originally intended to be the closing track on the album.'

'Thanks to everyone who voted in the online poll to help compile this "Best of the EPs" CD. Tracks that also appear on albums were ineligible, as were live, acoustic and remixed tracks. Onliy original songs were allowed. Virtually all the tracks on this CD were in the top 20 of the poll, while I added one or two of my favourites.'


1. Take It Easy Chicken

'This was the first track we ever recorded. We bought a reel of multi-track tape and drove down to Sonic Studios in Ealing London (this was the cheapest studio we could find in the back of the Melody Maker) to record four songs in a day in the summer of 1995. As our favourite track from the session we had 1000 copies of Take It Easy pressed up on 7" vinyl to launch our garden shed record label 'Sci Fi Hi Fi' and sent a few in the post to Radio 1 where it was played by John Peel and Steve Lamacq. I couldn't believe it when I first heard them play the song, we'd never played a gig, could hardly play live and had no record deal.'

2. Everyone Must Win

'One of my favourite bands and one that was a big influence on me for their mix of synths and guitars, was Magazine. Although I knew Howard Devoto (Magazine's main man) had not really been writing and recording for a while, I approached him anyway to collaborate on something and in return received a set of lyrics and a demo in the post. Chad and I wrote the music around the lyrics and we worked out the rhythms and arrangement as a band in Parr Street Studios, Liverpool. This was my first collaboration and I was really nervous as to what Howard would think of it. This song became a regular in our live set.'

3. Closed For Business

'After completing our first U.S. tour in 1997 we returned to Parr Street studios where we had done most of our recording during the previous year. We recorded four tracks for an EP which was to be released in October 1997. This song, which I had written on the road in America, became the lead track on the EP. It was really not a commercial track compared to The World's Still Open which was going to be the lead track but became relegated to being track 4 for being too commercial.'

'This was originally a contender for lead track on our first EP for Parlophone records after signing to them at the start of 1996. In the end it was pipped by Egg Shaped Fred. It was part of our live set all the way through the first album and then we resurrected it for our headline performance at the Reading Festival in 1999.'

5. Can't Afford To Die

'We recorded this track at Surrey Sound Studios in Leatherhead, which doesn't exist anymore. We went there because that's where The Police recorded a load of their early singles and we wanted to get a Stewart Copeland drum sound. We didn't quite manage it, but the track turned out alright anyway.'

1. Rock 'N' Roll Loser

'Originally we thought this was going to be the first single off Little Kix, but everyone went off it and it was discarded from the session. It has sat in the vaults at Abbey road since 1999.'

2. Secrets

'A song we tried out on our last tour. I intended to add an intro and a different chorus, but this is where we were at with the track when the band split. Only a guide vocal exists. This song was always known as, "the totally different track". I wrote the lyrics after the track was recorded and put this throw away vocal on during the last night of a session at Rockfield studio in Wales.'

3. These Days (Full Length Version)

'This is the original full length version of a little section that was going to be on the 4th album. It originally started as this song, but I eventually edited it down. The song is about reaching a place or peace and calm in life but not being sure if its apathy or genuine happiness.'

4. It's OK

'Both It's Ok and Drones were songs I wrote at Stanbridge Farm in Sussex while rehearsing with the band. We recorded them live at RAK Studios in St. John's Wood, London in early 2000.'
